Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, its year round population was 4,820. It is a port of entry for Bay Ferries, whose high speed ferry, the CAT, travels between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Bar Harbor.
Bar Harbor is a thriving year round community and a popular summer destination in the Down East region of Maine. Situated between Frenchman's Bay and Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor is home to the College of the Atlantic and Jackson Laboratory, in addition to Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory at the village of Salisbury Cove.
Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor is a Critical Access Hospital providing a wide range of services. Connors Emerson elementary school is located in downtown Bar Harbor. Mount Desert Island High School is located a few miles outside of town on the Eagle Lake road.
Bar Harbor is situated on the east side of Mt. Desert Island surrounded by Acadia National Park. The harbor is a working waterfront for the lobsterman and host to schooners, large private yachts and many cruise ships during the summer season. Myriad restaurants from fine dining to quick meals abound with many interesting shops to visit.

 Here you see the "CAT" coming in by the Porcupine Islands off the jut of Bar Harbor, viewed from the overlokk on the Park Loop Road - about a mile hike from Great Haven. The "CAT", by the way, is the Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia ferry which runs round trip most days spring to fall.

Duck Brook Bridge is a fine example of the beautiful stone bridges throughout the park. This is a 2 mile hike or bike ride from your front door at Great Haven.
